The Staff Selection Commission, or SSC, plans a big hiring spree in 2025. They’ll be filling 68,929 roles in a range of government departments. That’s 15% more than in 2024.

The SSC, under the Department of Personnel and Training, aims to provide transparent and skill-focused hiring. The plan aims to generate more jobs, simplify the selection process, and prepare candidates for modern roles by adding new sections to the test.

 

Recruitment Statistics and Vacancy Distribution  

Sectoral Distribution of Vacancies  

The government intends to recruit 68,929 personnel in 2025, with a significant share allocated to the Ministry of Defense. The new hires will span clerical, technical assistant, and administrative officer roles, reflecting an effort to reinforce the ministry’s operational capacity.

The Ministry of Home Affairs leads the hiring drive, with 27,973 vacancies across law enforcement and administrative functions, including constables and senior officials. The Ministry of Finance follows, seeking to fill 12,456 positions.

Grade-wise Distribution  

Job vacancies are categorized into three groups: Gazetted, Non-Gazetted, and Group C. Gazetted positions require decision-making, Non-Gazetted positions involve office work and technical duties, and Group C has 37,884 positions.

 

Examination Categories and Schedules  

Combined Graduate Level (CGL) 2025  

The CGL test, spanning 25,634 vacancies, is highly competitive, with applications accepted from January 15 to February 28, 2025. The test includes descriptive tests in August, followed by skill tests in September and October.

You can become an Assistant Audit Officer (3,456 job openings), an Income Tax Inspector (4,892 job openings), a GST Inspector (3,768 job openings), or a Central Excise Inspector (2,943 job openings).

Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) 2025

CHSL examinations for 30,786 vacancies for 12th-grade pass candidates are set to take place in September 2025, with Tier-I and Tier-II exams scheduled for May and June, respectively.

Some of the key positions by way of CHSL include Lower Division Clerk (12,453), Data Entry Operator (8,976), Postal/Sorting Assistant (5,678) and Court Clerk (3,679).

Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) 2025  

The MTS examination is aimed at candidates who have completed their 10th grade, with a total of 12,509 vacancies available. Applications will be accepted from April 1 to April 30, 2025, and the exam is scheduled to take place between July and August 2025.

 

Salary Structure and Benefits

Pay Scale (As per 7th CPC)  

The 7th Central Pay Commission governs the salary structure for positions recruited through the SSC.

  • Group ‘B’ Gazetted jobs fall under Pay Levels 8-10, with basic pay ranging from ₹47,600 to ₹56,100.
  • Non-Gazetted posts fall under Pay Levels 6 to 7, with basic pay ranging from ₹35,400 to ₹44,900.
  • Group ‘C’ posts are in Pay Levels 2-5, with basic pay ranging from ₹19,900 to ₹29,200.

Additional Benefits 

SSC-appointed employees receive Dearness allowance (42% of basic pay), house rent allowance (8%-24%), and transport allowance (₹1,350-₹3,400) in addition to their basic salary.

Other benefits include ₹ 2,250 per month as Children’s Education Allowance and an annual increment of 3% of basic pay. These advantages make SSC jobs highly attractive and economically lucrative.

In the CHSL exam, candidates need to have passed the 12th grade with a minimum of 60% marks.

Age Limits and Relaxations  

The age limits differ depending on the examination category. For the CGL exam, the age limit for the general category is set between 18 and 32 years. In the case of the CHSL exam, the limit is from 18 to 27 years, while for the MTS exam, it ranges from 18 to 25 years.

Relaxations in age are available for candidates from reserved categories:

  • SC/ST candidates can enjoy a 5-year relaxation
  • OBC candidates receive a 3-year relaxation
  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD) are granted a 10-year relaxation
  • Ex-servicemen can avail of a relaxation that equals their length of service plus an additional 3 years
  • Candidates who are domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir are eligible for a 5-year relaxation

CGL Examination Structure

  • Tier II, a computer-based test with four papers
  • Tier III, a written test with an essay and letter or application
